Bohdan Malyk, 81, born in New York, NY and raised in East Brunswick, NJ by his immigrant parents originally from Lviv, Ukraine, passed away quietly on June 10, 2023, in New Bern, NC, in close residence to his eldest son, Brendan. Bo had formerly resided in Wilmington, NC where he spent the last 23 years in retirement alongside his loving wife, Patricia Elaine Malyk (née Horvath) with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Bo took ill shortly after Patricia’s passing in January 2023, ultimately dying of a broken heart. While we miss our parents tremendously, we find comfort that our Dad is finally where he longed to be, rejoined alongside of our mom, Patricia.
Prior to his “early” retirement in North Carolina, Bo spent his working career with Pat and his family of three sons living in Pennington and Seaside Park, New Jersey.
Bo was a physician and alumni of Rutgers University (undergraduate) class of 1964 followed by Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University for his professional degree as Medical Doctor, class of 1968. This was followed by a medical residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology with the same University and then service with the United States Air Force from 1972-1974 as a Major.
After a brief stint in private practice, he spent the next phase of his professional career as a Medical Director and executive with Ortho Pharmaceutical, the obstetrics and gynecological-focused pharmaceutical and medical device subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.
In 1990, Bo returned to the medical practice as a clinical professor with the Ob/Gyn residency of Hahnemann University Hospital (Philadelphia) and later came full circle with his Johnson & Johnson roots to Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (New Brunswick) where he served as Chief of Ob/Gyn Residency before retiring in 1999.
Despite an illustrious professional, medical career Bo held a focus and fascination with many things in his leisure. This spanned music, model railroading, home renovation, gardening, wine making, and automotive repair and restoration of classic cars. His unceasing curiosity, drive and ‘can do’ attitude was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Bo is predeceased by his father Dmytro Malyk, his mother Mary Malyk (née Koza) of New Brunswick NJ & his wife Patricia Elaine Malyk. He is survived by his 3 sons; Brendan Malyk & daughter in law Bonnie Malyk of Havelock, NC, Dr. Timothy Malyk of Skowhegan, ME and Scott Malyk & daughter in law Jaclyn Malyk of Chester, NJ as well as his brother-in-law & sister-in-law Arnold & Bernice Horvath of Toms River, NJ. The six grandchildren of the family include Cameron Malyk (Havelock, NC), Logan, Leland & Lucien Malyk (Skowhegan, ME) and Mia & Morgan Malyk (Chester, NJ).
Arrangements will be provided by Bronson & Guthlein Funeral Home of Milltown, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Milltown, NJ on July 8, 2023 at 10:00am, the diocese where Bo and Pat where married on June 26, 1965. Internment will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Brunswick, NJ.
