Joseph P. Sweeney, Jr. 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 16 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 25, 1951 in Oakland, California. He grew up in Old Bridge and Milltown prior to being a long time resident of East Brunswick, NJ.
He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Sr. and Dolores Sweeney, his brother Robert Sweeney and his sister Mary Sweeney. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Deborah Sweeney; daughter and son in law, Tara and Stephan Perdoni; daughter Leah Sweeney, brother and sister in law, Charles and Dawn Sweeney, brother and sister in law, Gregory and Pamela Sweeney. Survived by nephews and niece, Robert Sweeney II, Shane Sweeney, Alyssa Sweeney, and Logan Sweeney. Also survived by great niece Aaliyah Gilcrist. He will be sorely missed by his extended family members.
Joe attended New Brunswick High School and he is survived by his longtime friends also known as the “Brunswick Boys”. He attended college at Newark State College, currently known as Kean University.
Joe started his career as a warehouse supervisor with Johnson and Johnson and then employed as a regional sales representative for 25 years at International Paper in New York City. During his retirement years, he was a dedicated and active parishioner of St. Bartholomew Church in East Brunswick, where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and RCIA.
Joe will be missed dearly as he touched the lives of many friends. He loved spending time with his family and being outdoors, among several other enjoyments throughout his life such as reading historical or political books, traveling, sailing, hiking, and hunting.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Bartholomew Church in East Brunswick. Friends and family will be received Friday, May 20, 2022 from 4:00-8:00pm at the Bronson and Guthlein Funeral Home, 152 North Main Street, Milltown, NJ 08850. The funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 10:00am at St. Bartholomew Church, 470 Ryders Lane, East Brunswick, NJ 08816 followed by burial at Holy Cross Burial Park, 840 Cranbury South River Road, Jamesburg, NJ 08831.
